EWS Retirement in Exchange Online: What IssTech Customers Need to Know
Microsoft has announced the upcoming retirement of Exchange Web Services (EWS) in Exchange Online, with plans to begin blocking EWS requests from third-party apps starting October 1, 2026. As Microsoft transitions away from EWS in favor of the more modern and secure Microsoft Graph API, we want to ensure you know exactly what this means for your IssTech services.
What is Changing?
Microsoft Graph is taking over as the primary way to integrate with Exchange Online for accessing mail, calendars, contacts, and mailbox settings. (Note: This retirement only applies to Exchange Online. If you are using on-premises Exchange Server, you are not affected by this change).
How IssProtect for Cloud and AvePoint Are Managing the Transition
As your dedicated IT provider, IssTech is working closely with our trusted partner, AvePoint, to monitor these changes continuously. We are following this transition every step of the way to guarantee that none of our customers will be affected by the deprecation of EWS.
Here is what is happening behind the scenes:
Proactive Monitoring: IssTech and AvePoint is actively tracking the updates and validating how they apply to your managed services, backups, and data environments.
Vendor Collaboration: AvePoint is working hard alongside the Microsoft Graph team to shift all necessary flows to Graph and address any feature gaps. They are ensuring this is completely resolved in good time well before Microsoft disables EWS.
Do You Need to Do Anything Right Now?
No immediate action is required from you. IssTech and AvePoint are proactively managing the heavy lifting of this transition so you don't have to.
In the future, however, you may need to re-authorize AvePoint applications or approve new Microsoft Graph permissions within your tenant. If and when action is required on your end, IssTech will provide clear, step-by-step guidance and advance notice so you can update your permissions with complete confidence.
We Will Keep You Posted
Our commitment to you is a seamless, "no surprises" transition. As AvePoint rolls out their updates and Microsoft finalize the Graph capabilities, we will continue to keep you informed.
